This cluster will not cause that and can safely be driven with a tamper until it is coded. This cluster was tested in my personal requires coding using or by a mechanic with Bmw programming tools and will show the tamper until is performed but hard work of getting it to state where can be coded has been done. Diesel engines used a different cluster with lower rpm tachometer.
I bought 2 used clusters for testing and was able to get both recorded. This cluster is compatible with E70 gas engines including the I kept one for my own use and am now selling this.
This is a used reprogrammed instrument cluster from Bmw X5 to be equivalent factory uncoded. I bought the X5 as a second car for and paying an extra was not option. Suggestions for coding: I suggest coding the cluster to enable digital speed display.
Background of this cluster: I did some research to figure out how reset the cluster back uncoded state match Bmw replacement clusters that sells for 1500. My day job is as a computer engineer and I have background technician so was able to figure it all out but took lot of time research. A warning on used instrument clusters: cluster from vehicle with more miles than your car will cause to inherit that cars after short time which is normally less 100 of driving.
The outer bezel can be easily swapped with your original if desired.
This cluster has been set to miles but will not change your vehicles mileage any more than getting a new from Bmw for would. The cluster has a few light scratches that are very hard to see when installed. 8i and worked perfectly for a week before being removed reprogrammed back to an uncoded state with new chip it is now re-programmable match any E70 X5 gas engine.
